THERAPY FOR ASIAN & FILIPINO-AMERICANS

I’m Mariel (pronounced Meh-ree-elle).

I help Asian and/or Filipino American millennials manage anxiety, depression, and generational trauma so they can have healthier relationships with others and themselves.

There is apparently no such thing as anxiety, ADHD, or depression in many Asian cultures (I’m being sarcastic). Often times, we bear that stigma and keep our problems to ourselves. We end up suffering alone. Then when we finally decide to seek help, we have difficulty finding a therapist that understands our cultural and generational norms and beliefs. To be honest, even the most well-intentioned therapists may not have a clue on what it’s like to have immigrant parents.

When I was younger, it was near impossible to find an Asian or Filipino-American therapist. I've had to explain different aspects of my culture repeatedly before we could dive deep into the real therapeutic work. It was annoying, discouraging, and exhausting! Now, as a psychotherapist, I strive to provide culturally-attuned therapy because feeling 'seen' impacts the effectiveness of treatment.
